Hello! Well it's been over 2 years since I wrote my last post. At the time my dryness was being exacerbated by working on a laptop for a few hours a day. I was also just beginning to lose eyebrow hair (I know - weird).
I thought it might be interesting for some of you to hear how my dry eyes have progressed since then. Firstly a number of things have changed. I stopped working for a start (for various reasons) which I guess temporarily helped my eyes. Overall though, my eyes have worsened. Last year I experienced a couple of months of severe dryness. My main symptoms were pain, extreme sensitivity to the sun and of course more severe grittiness, soreness, closing of eyelids. I also had a few episodes of eye infections (conjunctivitis). After a few weeks of trying to manage my symptoms on my own I asked my GP for a referral back to the ophthalmologist.
It had been about 6 years since I had been to the hospital for my dry eyes (which they treated by closing my punctal ducts). By now I felt desperate and tired of this condition. Anyway, as it happened things were about to get worse. My first appointment was at a general eye clinic (not the hospital). However about 2 days before this my right eye had been more painful than usual and bloodshot. When I looked closely at my eye I noticed a grey spot on my iris. This scared me and I immediately phoned up the clinic and asked to be seen sooner. They booked me in on the same day.
When the doctor examined me, to my shock he said the grey spot was a corneal ulcer and needed immediate treatment... (tbc).
It's been a while...
I haven't updated my blog for a few weeks for a number of reasons, mainly because I've been working in the evenings on my laptop. One of the by products of working has been an increase eye dryness. This time round it has manifested as excessive tear production in my left eye - yes this can happen with dry eye as the eye tries to compensate the dryness (and for me it is more likely to happen as I have had my punctal ducts closed). My right eye has just been feeling very dry/tired/sore. I've been treating by using more of my eye drops.
On a separate note - something bizarre has been happening to my eye area - I have been losing eyebrow hair! I have no idea why but my eyebrows are looking very patchy. In a panic I had my self tested for thyroid disease but (thankfully!) this isn't the cause. I just hope they start growing back as otherwise I'll have to start penciling in the patches :).
