To see without smell...

Out of all the senses we have sight is probably the most precious. Ask yourself which sense could you be without – Hearing? Touch? Taste? Smell? Sight?.

It’s a thought provoking question, which will hopefully remain just a question for most of you. I say most of you because I know what it’s like to be without one of these senses completely. I can hear, see (with glasses) and touch, but I can’t smell – which in turn means I can’t taste properly.

Now most people do a double take when I say I can’t smell – some instant questions are along the lines of “just this smell?” or “do you have a cold?” or “so you can’t smell anything?”.

That’s right – I can’t smell anything. Nothing good and nothing bad. I wish I could smell food, flowers, perfumes, I guess just ‘life’ but no such luck. Of course there are some benefits – whilst others wretch at the smell of vomit or baby pooh or some other repulsive scent I remain blissfully unaware.

I’ve never been given a medical explanation as to why – to be honest out of all the senses to lose this would be the top one it’s doesn’t require medical intervention. The only thing I worry about is not being able to smell something potentially toxic (this is on my ‘things which might cause my death list’!).
